Microsoft Lync Phone Edition End of Support
Microsoft recently announced they are dropping support for Transport Layer Security (TLS) versions 1.0 and 1.1 in Office 365. The deployment of TLS 1.2 means Lync Phone Edition (LPE) devices will no longer be supported after 31st October 2018.
If you haven’t transitioned to new devices by the 31st October 2018 you’ll experience issues connecting and signing in to Skype for Business in Office 365. It’s critical LPE devices are replaced prior to the end of life.
Why is support for TLS 1.0 and 1.1 being dropped?
TSL 1.0 and 1.1 both have known flaws and vulnerabilities. Microsoft have said there are no known vulnerabilities in their implementation of TLS, but with an ever-increasing volume of threats Microsoft is being proactive by disabling TSL 1.0 and 1.1 in Office 365. It could be a matter of time before vulnerabilities are discovered and exploited.
Who does this affect?
You can gauge your immediate impact by answering the following questions
- Do you have any Lync Phone Edition devices?
- Do you use Office 365? (Exchange Online or Skype for Business Online)
If you answered no to both questions, you are safe for now. If you have LPE devices but don’t use Office 365 Exchange Online or Skype for Business Online, your LPE devices will continue to work. This is unless your organisation disables TLS 1.0 and 1.1 and/or your LPE devices need to call users who use Skype for Business Online.
What LPE devices are affected?
What are the options?
Unfortunately, it isn’t possible to upgrade affected devices to support TLS 1.2. If you have any of these devices in your environment we suggest you develop a plan to transition to compatible models before October 31st, 2018.
